Work Permit Application / Extension

  • Foreigners are not authorized to work legally in Canada minus a valid work permit. There are two types of work permit: an open work permit and a closed work permit. The applicant will apply for a work permit according to what suits their situation best. Post-graduate work permits are an example of an open work permit.
  • Open work permit holders can work for any employer recognized by the Canadian government.
  • Close work permit holders can only work for specific employers for a specific occupation. Change of occupation or employer will require undergoing additional documentation, – such as application for LMIA.
  • If all conditions are met, an extension can be applied for so long as it fall within 30 days of the expiry date of the work permit.


  • An LMIA is a document that Canadian employers may require from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) when planning to hire a foreign worker.  Upon receipt of a positive LMIA, the foreign worker can then apply for a work permit. Once the permit is approved, the foreign worker can only work for this employer.
  • Another advantage of an LMIA, is that the applicant will automatically receive 50- 200 points in Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) if the applicant is applying through federal Express Entry.
